The Beginning of My ‘Wildfell Era’: A reflection from Sophie in Year 5

This year, my Melbourne Girls Grammar journey continued as I began my first semester at Wildfell. In Year 5, I have enjoyed meeting a lot of new people and making connections, doing new things with them, expanding my original friendships and including others. As well as having new classmates to help me study and develop new ways of learning.

I have loved my new teachers because they are so kind and always help me with my learning and activities that my class are doing. I have also loved being in an open learning space with other classes and teachers. I enjoy all the sport facilities and the Artemis Centre because I have always loved sport. I really like having Artemis on my campus.

One of the challenges that I faced in Semester 1 was that I broke my foot, and it was very difficult to get around. I was also extremely disappointed that I could not do any sport while I was hurt. I missed SSV Netball and Cross Country, which are two of my favorite things. But the positive was that everyone was very helpful and looked after me. Another thing that I have loved this year is being in a Saturday Netball team at Yarra Netball Association [formerly Richmond]. My netball team is so exciting, and I loved meeting with my friends and training with them. In my netball team I got to display teamwork with my team, and I also got to build a connection with my netball coach and make friends with her. I loved seeing my netball coach around school, she would always help me out if I had any problems.

Something that was new to me was House Drama. I performed for the first time and it was very rewarding! I never thought I could have gone on stage and done it, but I just faced my fear, and it was actually so much fun. I never thought I could do it because I’ve always had stage fright and get very frightened of talking in front of people. So, this was a big step up for me and I’m probably going to do it again next year.

I thought it was fantastic that when we went into Year 5, we got Year 9 buddies. I love my buddies so much and they really have had an impact on how I act and how I feel when I’m around them. I also love how the buddies are in the same House as you, because that’s just another way to connect with them. My buddies are so kind, and they will always look out for me, and they always say hi to me whenever they walk past me around school. I’ve loved having my Year 9 buddies so much.

Overall, I have loved Year 5 so far. As I reflect on my first semester at Wildfell, I am excited about Semester 2 and I look forward to the new opportunities it will bring.
