From the Deputy Principals: 17 June 2024

As the temperatures drop in Melbourne and the plane trees along Anderson Street have largely shed their huge leaves, we are reminded that we are approaching the shortest day of the year – the winter solstice. Our students and teachers are eagerly anticipating the mid-year break and some will be venturing to warmer climates. This term break marks the mid-point of the year and the count down toward final examinations begins for our Year 12 students.

The Early Learning Centre is collecting coats and warm clothes to donate to Our Village (formerly ‘St Kilda Mums’). If you have any items of children’s clothing that you would like to donate (they must be clean and in good condition), please drop them at Merton Hall or Morris Hall Reception before 9.00am on Thursday 20 June for a special Assembly in the ELC.

Our Morris Hall students have also been engaged in community service. In Week 8, Caroline Street was taken over by a large number of superheroes! The girls (and teachers) had a fantastic day dressed up as their favourite superhero, raising $247.00 for ‘Hero 4 HeartKids’ 2024. We really appreciated the generosity of our families who donated a variety of items to put together bathroom bags for families in need. Year 4 students were joined by the Salvation Army to sort and pack the bags.

On Friday 14 June, our GSV AFLW Senior Team finished their very successful season, defeating Genazzano in the semi-final (62 to 0) and then MLC (51 to 9) in the Grand Final at the Melbourne Grammar Main Oval. The team did us proud and were fearsome opponents as MLC put up a good fight.  Everyone brought their best to the game but the player awarded Best on Ground was Chloe Williams in Year 11 (who kicked four goals!). The Merton Army turned out in force, with drums, saxophone and plenty of loud cheering. MGS students also joined in supporting from the sidelines. Warmest congratulations to the team on a well-earned flag, after being undefeated all season!

The Year 9 students left for Arnhem Land yesterday (along with 12 staff including Dr Toni Meath) to participate in the Midawaar cultural immersion program with the Yolngu people. Our students are very fortunate to be able to participate in this wonderful experiential learning opportunity ‘walking on country’ for five days.

On Tuesday, Year 11 and 12 students undertaking Unit 3 and 4 VCE studies will be participating in the General Achievement Test. This important milestone in students’ VCE journeys requires focus and commitment, and we wish all well for this endeavour. With the semester break, we see many of our senior students balancing rest with study to ensure that they are well prepared for their external exams in Term 4.

On Wednesday, Year 11 students will travel to Phillip Island for a three day Retreat focused on team building and leadership. Activities on offer will include: abseiling, a flying fox, bike riding, a giant swing, completing a problem solving/initiative course and a mechanical climbing wall. In Term 3, the nomination and election process for the 2025 Student Executive Council will begin in earnest. We wish them well in all their endeavours!

We look forward to welcoming Archbishop Philip Freier to MGGS on Wednesday. We are hosting visitors from a number of schools, students from Years 10 and 12 will join in a chapel service and conversation for the annual Anglican Schools Forum. Our guest speaker is Ms Carolyn Clark OAM, former Deputy Chair of Council and past parent.

In Term 3, students in the Middle and Senior Years will begin the process of choosing subjects for 2025. Current Year 10 families will have an information evening on 17 July, to which all are invited. Information will also be sent home for those unable to attend.

We wish all Grammarians, their families and our staff a well-earned term break. Safe travels to our boarders heading home and to those travelling to regional Victoria, intestate or overseas. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3.

Yours sincerely,
